Meaning you can upload the song to Spotify and keep all money generated, license the song to film/tv for a fee, or free to use the music in any content you create. # omgkirbyDAO Lite Paper This Lite Paper is a Living Document -- June 2022 Omgkirby DAO is a community for lofi fans, artists, and builders to help shape what omgkirby will become as an artist and a brand. At the core of this distributed model is the world’s first generative music & art NFT with full intellectual property rights. Through this collective experiment we are expanding the idea of what an artist can be. Despite unprecedented technological advancements disrupting the music industry in the past few decades, the most power and money have remained concentrated in the hands of record labels and streaming platforms. The expansion of Web3, however, has brought with it a unique opportunity to disrupt traditional industry models in a way that allows artists to take control of their art and share the value it creates with those who create it, their supporters. Since its inception, omgkirby has created some of the most popular lofi music in the space and in the process, a community of **1 million monthly listeners**. We now step boldly into what we believe is the future of music creation and consumption. Through a highly engaged and Web3-native music community we are bringing artist, fans/supporters, and label production together in a single decentralized organization and creating the conditions of possibility for disrupting the exploitative relationships and power imbalances that have defined the music industry. The following document represents the omgkirby DAO **Lite Paper**. This is an initial depiction of omgkirby DAO’s governance architecture and roadmap. It will be workshopped by the “DAO Operations Working Group '' during Working Group Session 2 (WGS2) of the DAO (described in more detail below). Following the conclusion of this session, the Operations Working Group will submit a final **White Paper** for feedback and confirmation by the broader omgkirby DAO community. # Overview The omgkirby DAO launched with a [genesis NFT drop](https://www.notables.co/gallery/omgkirby) of 3,000 unique pieces of generative lofi music. Each of these individual NFTs was a novel combination of algorithmically-assisted music and hand-drawn art created through beautiful cooperation between human and machine. Twenty-five percent (25%) of primary sales went to the collective DAO-owned treasury, controlled by a representative DAO Committee and the DAO Community of NFT holders. A second and latest access point to the omgkirby DAO is [a generative drop of 5,000 avatars](https://mirror.xyz/omgkirby.eth/Xjbm1pq-9mJF7gx-tvx3zUp_s4B3LCL89vmuPCYMENY) created by Singaporean digital artist [ValerieHazLife](https://www.instagram.com/valeriehazlife/?hl=en). Free to mint for any omgkirby Genesis NFT holder and inspired by the radical possibilities of anonymity and community, these PFPs offer a way for new members to join the omgkirby DAO community. **NFT/PFP Utility** * NFT owners gain complete ownership of the song in its entirety, including Master Recording and Publishing rights. This also includes access to lossless 24-Bit stem masters which will be made available soon. * All NFT holders are members of the omgkirby DAO and control the omgkirby treasury. Each NFT equates to 1 vote in community decision-making and over how the DAO treasury is used. * omgkirby is the sole determinant of future NFT drops. A portion of every future NFT primary sale (10%) will go to the DAO’s treasury and DAO members will have first exclusive access. **DAO Structure** The omgkirby DAO is made up of multiple modular layers with the artist at the center of a nested configuration (Fig. 1). These layers are distinct yet fluid and have varying degrees of sovereignty. The DAO’s two primary governing bodies are the **DAO Committee** and the **DAO Community**. Operations of the DAO are structured through instance-based **Working Groups**, which form and dissolve according to Working Group Sessions, which last for a period of eight (8) weeks per session. The community-owned resources are strategically utilized to disrupt gatekeeping mechanisms that act as barriers to entry for emerging and marginalized talent. 1. **Intellectual Property:** omgkirby DAO is committed to developing new models of IP for the music industry. Omgkirby asset-holders have full IP of music associated with their NFTs. omgkirby DAO does not decide or have ownership in omgkirby’s current catalog of music and future covers/remixes, which are covers and used to increase the profile of omgkirby as an artist. 2. **Community-Generated Value**: Value in the music industry is generated through connection between artists and their fans/supporters. Omgkirby DAO seeks to remove third-party actors from the music industry's value-chain. 3. **Return of Value:** omgkirby DAO aims to create a new model of music generation, distribution and consumption that centers both artists and supporters. We will foster community leadership and incentivize value generation through community-approved reward structures. 4. **Governing Document:** This **White Paper\[1]** is omgkirby DAO’s guiding governance document. Any of the first principles can be modified or expanded by the DAO Committee with a 2/3 majority vote, or by the DAO Community with a 2/3 majority of participating voting power and a 2/3 majority ratification by the DAO Committee. Additionally, a percentage of royalties earned from the secondary sales of the genesis NFTs will also flow back into the DAO treasury. The DAO will be free to vote on changes to this % as they see fit. Over the long term, the treasury will be continually replenished through several new and innovative initiatives proposed by the founding team as well as the DAO community through established governance protocols. In future NFT drops, 10% of the primary sale will go to the DAO’s treasury and royalties will go to omgkirby to support their continued music generation. **Step 2: DAO Committee Formation** The DAO Committee initially comprises the founding project team and holds executive authority. It manages, controls, and protects the organizational treasury, serving as the source of regulation and control in a decentralized system. The committee will immediately start a process of progressive decentralization, expanding to include DAO Community Members. It also has the ability to facilitate the addition/removal of committee member(s) along with the modification of governance rules. **Step 3: DAO Community Formation** The DAO Community is token-gated and comprises the owners of the genesis NFT drop as well as the new PFP holders. In addition to full rights ownership of omgkirby NFT art & music, being a part of the DAO community gives members the ability to influence the creative direction of the artist/brand and govern the DAO treasury. Community members do this by voting off-chain on Snapshot, with decisions being implemented by the DAO Committee, until further automation is feasible. Additionally, the DAO community will have pathways to organize into working groups of “DAO contributors.” These sub groups will be purpose/task-based, temporal, opt-in committees of community members that set out to achieve milestones for the DAO. Reward structures for committee participation will be determined by the DAO community, or on a case-by-case basis in working group proposals. **Step 4: DAO Governance Operationalization** Building on its core value of decentralization and iterative innovation, omgkirby DAO will implement an initial governance system that offers creative flexibility and operational transparency in accordance with the first principles. The DAO recognizes that this initial system may need several modifications to meet the community’s current and emergent needs, and therefore must be tweaked in response. # Decision Making The governance infrastructure of the DAO is designed such that the ‘voting threshold required to make decisions is proportional to the degree to which that decision impacts the DAO Community, and whether or not it leads to irreversible use of resources in the DAO treasury. The proportionality between various kinds of decisions that the DAO might need to vote on can be understood through the IMPACT - REVERSIBILITY Matrix below(Fig. 3): Most of the decisions that the DAO needs to make fall within the spectrum outlined in the matrix above, ranging from low-stakes decisions that are easily reversible to high-stakes decisions that are difficult to reverse. In this initial iteration of the Lite Paper, proposals are divided into four different types: Low impact - Reversible; Low impact - Irreversible Proposal; High Impact - Reversible Proposal; High Impact - Irreversible Proposals. Low impact proposals are resolved through informal dialogue and voting in Discord. Working Group formation and high impact proposals are resolved through off-chain snapshot voting. The following section will be used as a starting point for workshopping to be completed by the DAO Operations Working Group during the upcoming Working Group Session 2. 1. **Low Threshold** 1. **Low impact - Reversible Proposal:** These decisions do not need a time and resource intensive process and must be optimized for speed. Since these decisions are the easiest way to encourage engagement within the broader DAO Community, the decision-making process is kept lean and virtually friction-less. There is no required quorum for proposals in this category, which are considered “Approved” if they are supported by at least 51% of participating voting power. The proposal may then move on for execution. These working groups are given free-reign to deliver value to the DAO, but held accountable to the community through proposals that cover implementation/costs and other logistics that ensure resources are being used effectively.Based largely on learnings generated from the[ Growth Working Group 22](https://gov.indexcoop.com/t/launching-a-growth-working-group/602) & other crypto communities, here are some key characteristics for omgkirby DAO Working groups: 1. **Problem-oriented:** Working groups are formed to solve specific problems, or take advantage of specific opportunities, in service of the entire omgkirbyDAO community. 2. **Concrete Outcomes/Measurable Results:** Ahead of their creation, it is clear what they intend to accomplish for the DAO. They are responsible for producing outcomes that impact omgkirbyDAO objectives. The process for implementing solutions and measuring impact must be described in the proposals generated by working groups. 3. **Big Commitment:** WG leader(s) are committed to serving the entire omgkirby community with the outcomes they are being paid to produce. This is for the comparatively few folks who have the time, energy, bandwidth, focus, and desire to uphold this level of commitment. WGs should have 1 directly responsible individual, and at most, 1 additional co-lead. 4. **Time-bound:** For starters, they are time-bound to a given session at most. We need to maximize iteration & learning. 5. **Funding:** They are approved & funded directly by the Treasury Committee (TC) after an in-the-open process. 6. **Reporting:** Leaders will be required to set KPIs and update the community each week on their progress. These are designed in a way that enables Working Groups to deliver value to the DAO in an effective, collaborative, and constructive manner. Given their temporal and purpose-led nature, each Working Group is formed at the beginning of a new Session to deliver on the goals for that particular session as approved by the Community. At the start of In the active period of 8 weeks that follow, Working Groups elect stewards that are responsible for ensuring that the values and interest of the DAO Community are being met. We saw 212 community members turn out to vote. This is approx: 10% of our Discord community (\~2400). For reference, [Friends With Benefits’](https://snapshot.org/#/friendswithbenefits.eth) last 5 proposals saw between 80-260 votes, for a Discord with 11K members. We are pleased with our beginning participation levels from the community, but strive to continue to increase participation. There are three main levels of active participation in the DAO we see at this point: 1. Voting in the DAO 2. Participating in Session initiatives by joining working groups 3. Day-to-day participation in our discord community. As we’ve implemented with our Snapshot voting, we believe POAPs, responsibility-based roles, and participation in DAO initiatives will be the best way to begin to build out a reputation system that will allow active participants in the DAO to credential themselves and position themselves as leaders within the DAO. Our next step towards fostering community leadership in the omgkirbyDAO is to introduce our “working groups” concept. Working groups are purpose-based, temporal, opt-in committees of community members that set out to achieve milestones for the DAO. These working groups will be given free-reign to deliver value to the DAO, but held accountable to the community through proposals that cover implementation/costs and other logistics that ensure resources are being used effectively. For the first iteration of our working groups, we are going to leverage the [work done by the Coop Index](https://gov.indexcoop.com/t/laying-the-rails-for-working-groups-wg-v1/975) in how they’ve structured their working groups. Below we are using the outline made by the Coop Index. Please note, that links are included for context from their original write up. We will make some tweaks for our community’s needs/context, however we want to make sure that credit is given to the heavy lifting they’ve done in pioneering the structure we’ll build on top of. ## Working Group Model Working Group Model If successful, Working Groups will enable clear leaders to assume responsibility for delivering meaningful outcomes that benefit the entire omgkirbyDAO. Based largely on learnings generated from the [Growth Working Group 22 ](https://gov.indexcoop.com/t/launching-a-growth-working-group/602)& other crypto communities (see “Addendum”), here are a some clear characteristics: 1. *Problem-oriented:* Working groups are formed to solve specific problems, or take advantage of specific opportunities, in service of the entire omgkirbyDAO community. 2. *Concrete Outcomes/Measurable Results:* Ahead of their creation, it is clear what they intend to accomplish for the DAO. They are responsible for producing outcomes that impact omgkirbyDAO objectives. The process for implementing solutions and measuring impact must be described in the proposals generated by working groups. 3. *Big Commitment:* WG leader(s) are committed to serving the entire omgkirby community with the outcomes they are being paid to produce. This is for the comparatively few folks who have the time, energy, bandwidth, focus, and desire to uphold this level of commitment. WGs should have 1 directly responsible individual, and at most, 1 additional co-lead. 4. *Time-bound:* For starters, they are time-bound to a given session at most. We need to maximize iteration & learning. 5. *Funding:* They are approved & funded directly by the Treasury Committee (TC) after an in-the-open process. 6. *Reporting:* Leaders will be required to set KPIs and update the community each week on their progress. Growing the pool of shared understanding is a fundamental goal. 7. *Continuity Commitment:* WG leaders must commit to ensuring continuity of their work at the end of their specific WG’s existence. 8. *No overlap:* WG’s should not be redundant with an already operating WG. ### How are they created? To enable omgkirbyDAO community members to quickly launch and learn, this is being kept simple, off-chain, and flexible for starters. Largely, it is making explicit steps the GWG took to create itself. Clearly responsible individuals ensures that complexity gets managed well for the community. * The TC is a short-cut to funding. * The TC is in position to help manage funding, alignment, and objectives. ### Initial Proposal The initial proposal should make clear to any reader the answers to 3 basic questions 1. This is an **awesome** accomplishment that is just the start for 'decentralized' artists! But the other important piece of this drop last week, was our free airdrop for all of the holders that joined our listening party on Twitter Spaces last Monday (May 9th, 2022)! We had over **175 holders register for this free airdrop**, greater than 12% of our total unique holders! I think this is an awesome display of engagement for our community. #### How * We hosted a listening party for "don't let me down" on Monday May 9th, 2022 on Twitter Spaces, and announced the airdrop during the broadcast * We used an [irig](https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigstreamsolo/) to play "don't let me down" during the Twitter Space * We set up a premint that required the account to verify they held a Genesis omgkirby NFT, their Twitter username & their Discord username * Created a test Manifold contract using [Manifold Studio](https://www.manifold.xyz/) and tested the airdrop on the [Rinkeby Testnet](https://medium.com/compound-finance/the-beginners-guide-to-using-an-ethereum-test-network-95bbbc85fc1d) * Deployed the contract to Ethereum Mainnet * We exported the csv of wallets from Premint on Wednesday May 11th, 2022 and [airdropped the token!](https://etherscan.io/address/0x249c052f0190f1e92b161c455843b26934bb04f2) #### Why - Technical * We used [Manifold Studio](https://www.manifold.xyz/) to deploy the contract, because it was my first time setting up a contract on the blockchain, and I wanted to ensure we didn't introduce any security issues * [Manifold Studio](https://www.manifold.xyz/) was super easy to use, I can definitely recommend checking it out for simple drops, having now used it * Manifold Studio currently offers two ERC token types you can use - ERC721 vs ERC1155 * ERC721 is the more common token used for NFTs - these are easily queried on Etherscan, and show up as individual NFTs on storefronts such as OpenSea (ie: [the omgkirby Genesis Collection](https://opensea.io/collection/omgkirby-genesis)). * ERC1155 are the token typically used for 'editions.' Manifold Studio allows you to upload a CSV file with all of the addresses you would like to have the token airdropped to - making this the ideal format for our NFT. * An ERC721 airdrop/mint will also have a much higher gas fee than an ERC1155 from my research & testing. #### Why - Functional * We wanted to do something to commemorate the first omgkirbyDAO artist collab - and airdropping a full song felt fresh/new. Some projects mint full length songs ([Catalog](https://beta.catalog.works/), [Sound.xyz](https://www.sound.xyz/)), but we couldn't find a ton of examples of artists airdropping the full song prior to release. * We used a premint signup to reduce the likelihood of community members feeling like they're spammed. By requiring Twitter username/Discord username, we were hoping to introduce friction so that people didn't spread their kirbies across xyz amount of wallets to dilute the drop. * We did an airdrop, rather than a lazy mint, because it felt more novel. In addition - due to the market performance last week, it felt like a fun way to distract from the economics, and remind everyone what can be cool about the space. #### Key Learnings/Next Steps * We will continue to explore the positives and negatives of holder rewards/on-chain music like this as we go! I think we have to be less worried about some of these decisions - go with the path of least resistance and then evaluate the effectiveness after time has passed. There is so little documentation that exists concerning airdropping full length songs or how to keep the community of a music NFT project engaged. A common scene in anime and manga media, which Valerie has obsessively consumed since she was a kid, is a summer festival where characters wear traditional Japanese masks. Through the widespread distribution of Japanese culture, these masks have taken on playful and kawaii (Japanese for “cute”) associations. Influenced by the anime style of the omgkirby Genesis and the communal nature of lofi music, Valerie has reinterpreted these mass-produced masks in her own style. We launched 3000 PFPs [**that are reserved from omgkirbyDAO Genesis holders until June 30th**](https://www.notables.co/gallery/omgkirby), after which they are granted to the DAO Treasury. In addition, we launched **2000 PFPs that were available for public minting.** Originally, we announced the PFP mint coming in late May, with a .1ETH asking price. But as market conditions changed, especially around ETH, and as we saw other free mints work successfully, we decided to pivot on our strategy. We removed the price tag from our mint, and instead reexamined what the goal of the mint was - growing the engaged community within the DAO. We launched the 'kirbylist' initiative about a week and a half prior to the mint - asking the public & some key partner projects to provide a quick blurb about *why* they wanted to be a part of the omgkirbyDAO via a Premint form. We then spent almost 48 hours (shoutout @Aurelian#7564) finding the best answers and scrubbing out as many botted responses as we could (and there were a ton). If someone 'won' the kirbylist spot, they were told via the Premint link they signed up with or email. The kirbylist was given 2 hours pre-public mint to pick up their omgkirby PFPs. The end result? A successful free PFP mint with over 1000 of the public mint PFPs going to the individuals selected by the kirbylist process! We're extremely proud of how the mint went overall - and excited to welcome all of the new members to the DAO over the coming weeks that make up Pre-Session 2. The other awesome piece here is the DAO ownership! 100% of the royalties from this work will flow into the DAO Treasury, and serves as a real asset we can point at as driving revenue. {% embed url="" %} But maybe the *most exciting* part of this announcement is our playlist placement. Session 2 will run 12 weeks, in two separate blocks. * Pre-Session: May 30th - June 27th * Session 2: June 27th - August 22nd The goal of the Pre Session is to peform this [#post-mortem](#post-mortem "mention") of Session 1, give all of the WG members a brief break, and take time to receive [Community Proposals](https://airtable.com/shrK27CfJVvkXHOc6). Towards the end of this Pre-Session, around June 20th, we will put all of the community temperature-checked proposals up for a Snapshot vote - and those that win will be granted their funding for the 8 week period that makes up Session 2. Similar to Session 1, Session 2 will be broken up into four sprints - Sprint 0 -> 4. The goal of Sprint 0 is to recruit your Working Group Team, and the remaining three sprints are for accomplishing the goal. I think this Session structure will continue to provide some good guidance for the DAO and ensure we're taking on bite-sized challenges that can be easily measured and delivered on. ## Proposals Our proposals for the end of Session 1 hint at what's to come in Session 2... more Working Groups! And ones that have the potential to be turned into a 'Core Group', such as Operations. * *Deliverable?* * Completed a survey and research project on governance models used by other popular DAOs. Members of the WG reached out to DAOs they were members of or were interested in, conducted an extensive survey, and then summarized their findings in the deck below! {% embed url="" %} * *What worked best in organizing your committee around delivering this initiative?* * Our working group consisted of 6 members and a WG lead. Relying upon asynchronous ways for us to work was very critical. We leveraged Airtable for a Kanban project management system Google Slides for our deliverable, and Discord for communication. This allowed us to work on our own schedules but stay on the same timeline. It was definitely critical for us to have calls for anyone who could attend (recorded for those unable to) that allowed us to iron out any questions, align on process/goal, and generally make our action items more approachable. * *What would you do differently if given the opportunity to redo this initiative?* * We had to adjust the scope of our project due to falling behind schedule. This was solely on me as the WG leader. My day job absorbed bandwidth that was intended for the WG project. This taught me a few key things about how we can more successfully execute the WG structure moving forward. * **Reduce Single Points of Failure:** * We should encourage proposals for working groups to include at least two leads. The idea being that individuals who help shape the proposal will have a higher sense of clarity around the vision/method to get there and will have more buy-in as contributors during the drafting process. * **Funding Working Groups in Phases:** * We had a low budget proposal and were able to contribute a meaningful governance recommendation within Season 1, however I can imagine a situation where a WG with a large budget is unable to deliver for whatever reason. We should consider designing some oversight on the progress of WGs as way to make sure that budgets are only unlocked as progress continues to avoid wasting DAO resources. * *How has this initiative opened up new opportunities for the community to fulfill its vision?* * This initiative is the first iteration of increasing the flexibility of our voting system to ensure that we have open and democratic processes in place that ensure we use resources according to the community’s preference. * Finally, we’ve included suggestions on further analysis that the next governance WG can use as jumping off points if they find our recommendations for voting structure is not satisfactory to put to a vote. I asked each member to spend some time understanding how DAOs they were a part of were going about Treasury Management and we arrived at: Utopia Labs for expense reporting & Dune.xyz dashboards for treasury tracking. * The issue here at the moment is that - Dune.xyz doesn't speak to the custom metadata we are creating in Utopia Labs, and that's where PowerBI became the most viable option. I have used PowerBI in the past, and the PowerQuery features made tying the below datasets together very straightforward. * historical etherscan data * Utopia Labs Data * Approved Snapshot Vote Spends * *What would you do differently if given the opportunity to redo this initiative?* * **Delegation** * I think first and foremost, as a WG Leader, I need to work more on delegation early on. I think we had everyone sort of running around blindly performing similar tasks, and this ultimately didn't make a ton of sense. If I had better organized into separate tasks from the jump, we might have been more productive, had more opportunities for individuals to participate and seen increased output. * **Technical Requirements** * Treasury Management is ultimately a hyper technical topic. While it's important for the WG to be transparent and accessible - better reviewing everyone's technical expertise or recruiting someone with more formal expertise in DAO Treasuries might have been beneficial. I have technical experience in data engineering & Business Intelligence that I was able to leverage to build these dashboards, but there were plenty of topics we wanted to discuss that we didn't get to. * One of these is Treasury Diversification. We got as far as discussing bond strategies as potential ways to diversify our holdings, but ultimately we lack the on-the-job-experience to make the call & feel confident in it. * *How has this initiative opened up new opportunities for the community to fulfill its vision?* * At the start of this Session, we had the wallet the original Genesis drop was deployed from as our sole Treasury. The wallet was operated by the Notables team - who were responsible with it - but it was still a high risk having a single person as the point of failure for payments getting sent out, verifying expenses, etc. * We now have a multisig wallet, comprehensive expense reporting and tracking, and a transparent treasury dashboard that requires 0 technical experience to look at and understand. * Hopefully this empowers more community members to feel confident in submitting Community Proposals for Session 2 and onwards - with responsible budgets and the aim of replenishing our Treasury! Discord and our Twitter DM group ended up being the easiest ways to community and relay information. * *Did you achieve or fall behind your proposed goals - why?* * This specific initiative needs much longer timelines. The process of finding artists interested in web3, creating the music, and curating the music is much more involved and takes much longer than we had initially predicted. * *How will next sprint be different?* * The OMG Kirby album has already brought together creatives and artists that are excited about web3 together in new ways and taken the OMG Kirby name to new groups. We feel that upon execution of the OMG Kirby album, we will reach and wide net of people interested in music and web3. Based on the feedback above I have a few key takeaways: 1. **Need to structure Working Groups a little differently** moving forward. We need to remove the single point of failure in having one Leader for each group. In addition, we need to better provide those leaders tools to delegate and recognize members who go above & beyond the ask. Right now it's up to each individual leader to create their structure, and there is no incentive to participate besides passion, a POAP & potential payment in ETH. 2. **Need to better forecast budgets**, we don't have any teams going over budget - but it also feels like some of the proposals earmarked far too large of amounts for the length of time the WG was going to exist. When we earmark this info, we also note that as an Outstanding Expense in our [Treasury Reporting dashboard](https://app.powerbi.com/view?pageName=ReportSection\&r=eyJrIjoiYzgxMDUxYmEtYjMzOS00YmMyLTlmMGQtOWRkNzBiYWM1ZDU5IiwidCI6IjhkYTQ3YTBjLTEwNzUtNGNkNy1hNWRiLTAyYTEzNDI0MmIzZSIsImMiOjF9), aka money that can't be touched. This makes us potentially illiquid if something was to happen to the market - or we needed funds quick for another time-sensitive project. ## Next Steps 1. **Onboard new DAO members** via the PFP that has now launched. Make sure our onboarding funnel is up to par, and make improvements where needed. 2. **Launch Community Proposal Form** and begin to implement the process to get Community Proposals from ideation to votes. 3. **Continue to promote our PFP project**, especially as we work towards our next generative collaboration with a prolific artist. ## Helpful Resources 1. For example - just by glancing at the above diagram, it's easy to identify that we need a better hook to keep those who join the Discord but are not yet holders. In the future, I would like to tie some basic metrics to each of these tiers so we can understand * how much are we spending to support this portion of the Community? * how many Community members do we have in this portion of the Community (sans external)? * how consistently are Community members staying engaged? By performing this analysis, we should be able to better separate our marketing team, which should focus on **growing** the community with external outreach, and our community team, which should focus on **engagement** from Discord community -> working group members. I think by having these two teams granted their own resource pools & their own goals, we'll be able to keep coming up with cool new ways to spread the omgkirby brand. This is an **awesome** accomplishment that is just the start for 'decentralized' artists! But the other important piece of this drop last week, was our free airdrop for all of the holders that joined our listening party on Twitter Spaces last Monday (May 9th, 2022)! We had over **175 holders register for this free airdrop**, greater than 12% of our total unique holders! I think this is an awesome display of engagement for our community. The contract is: [0x249c052f0190f1e92b161c455843b26934bb04f2](https://etherscan.io/address/0x249c052f0190f1e92b161c455843b26934bb04f2). #### How * We hosted a listening party for "don't let me down" on Monday May 9th, 2022 on Twitter Spaces, and announced the airdrop during the broadcast * We used an [irig](https://www.ikmultimedia.com/products/irigstreamsolo/) to play "don't let me down" during the Twitter Space * We set up a premint that required the account to verify they held a Genesis omgkirby NFT, their Twitter username & their Discord username * Created a test Manifold contract using [Manifold Studio](https://www.manifold.xyz/) and tested the airdrop on the [Rinkeby Testnet](https://medium.com/compound-finance/the-beginners-guide-to-using-an-ethereum-test-network-95bbbc85fc1d) * Deployed the contract to Ethereum Mainnet * We exported the csv of wallets from Premint on Wednesday May 11th, 2022 and [airdropped the token!](https://etherscan.io/address/0x249c052f0190f1e92b161c455843b26934bb04f2) #### Why - Technical * We used [Manifold Studio](https://www.manifold.xyz/) to deploy the contract, because it was my first time setting up a contract on the blockchain, and I wanted to ensure we didn't introduce any security issues * [Manifold Studio](https://www.manifold.xyz/) was super easy to use, I can definitely recommend checking it out for simple drops, having now used it * Manifold Studio currently offers two ERC token types you can use - ERC721 vs ERC1155 * ERC721 is the more common token used for NFTs - these are easily queried on Etherscan, and show up as individual NFTs on storefronts such as OpenSea (ie: [the omgkirby Genesis Collection](https://opensea.io/collection/omgkirby-genesis)). * ERC1155 are the token typically used for 'editions.' Manifold Studio allows you to upload a CSV file with all of the addresses you would like to have the token airdropped to - making this the ideal format for our NFT. * An ERC721 airdrop/mint will also have a much higher gas fee than an ERC1155 from my research & testing. #### Why - Functional * We wanted to do something to commemorate the first omgkirbyDAO artist collab - and airdropping a full song felt fresh/new. Some projects mint full length songs ([Catalog](https://beta.catalog.works/), [Sound.xyz](https://www.sound.xyz/)), but we couldn't find a ton of examples of artists airdropping the full song prior to release. * We used a premint signup to reduce the likelihood of community members feeling like they're spammed. By requiring Twitter username/Discord username, we were hoping to introduce friction so that people didn't spread their kirbies across xyz amount of wallets to dilute the drop. * We did an airdrop, rather than a lazy mint, because it felt more novel. In addition - due to the market performance last week, it felt like a fun way to distract from the economics, and remind everyone what can be cool about the space. #### Key Learnings/Next Steps * We will continue to explore the positives and negatives of holder rewards/on-chain music like this as we go! I think we have to be less worried about some of these decisions - go with the path of least resistance and then evaluate the effectiveness after time has passed. There is so little documentation that exists concerning airdropping full length songs or how to keep the community of a music NFT project engaged. Hopefully this can serve to help. * We want to set up a [dune ](https://dune.com/browse/dashboards)dashboard so we can track these tokens over time and see if they disperse as omgkirby or sad alex grow as artists. I will update this post once that query is live! * We want to publish a short mirror article later this month, in collaboration with omgkirby & sad alex, on what it means to release music on-chain (especially for free, to fans!). Ultimately, the goal here is to bring as much value as we can to existing holders, besides the upcoming PFP projects or anything that may follow. With the event coming to an end in the next week or so, I'm excited to see what the community enjoyed most, and what we can do following the PFP drop with any new members that will be hopping into the Discord. ### Twitter Spaces After some feedback from our Marketing Working Group during Sprint 1, we put a much bigger emphasis on Twitter Spaces during this sprint. We hosted two Twitter Spaces last week, each with >100 total listeners. The final sprint will still comprise of the "creation" phase of this album. Based on the feedback above I have a few key takeaways: 1. We may need to agree on a better way to delegate work, and reward/incentivize those that volunteer to help directly. 1. Almost every working group this Sprint suffered from poor delegation, causing them to fall behind schedule a bit, as there is a single point of failure. 2. Maybe creating a Vice-Lead, or a similar position, which has equal ability to make decisions or allocate resources if necessary, needs to be created for future sessions? ## Next Steps 1. You will be able to mint one (1) PFP *per* kirby in your wallet - ie: if you are holding six (6) kirbies in your wallet, you will be able to mint six (6) free PFPs. The tenets of this effort have been: 1. Ramp up of marketing efforts 2. Redesign the Discord 3. Random contests in ❓-┃trivia throughout the day (anime/gaming, etc), giving out 1 kirby/day based upon leaderboards! 4. Three kirbys given out to 🐸┃dank-economy leaderboards (See Pins in Economy) 5. Sneak Peaks with the goal of creating a reason to check out and interact in our Server at least once per day, and hopefully 5-7 times per week! At the same time, we wanted to avoid spamming users who want to be a part of the project, but don't want/need any incentive, or would rather be passive members of the server. **@Aurelian#7564** implemented a great practice of creating Event-specific roles (ie: '@Trivia Monger' in the server), so now we only ping the interested parties whenever something time-sensitive is occurring. ### Community Highlights 1. "Sprint 1” for the omg Kirby DAO album really is a multi-month process of finding talent and creating songs. This is too ambitious of a goal on a quick timeline, and realistically, this has several sub-sprints and will be 80% of the hardwork for this WG. * *How will next sprint be different?* * We will continue to move forward on Sprint 1 as this is the core of the WG’s task. This overall initiative will most likely take longer than the others and we will adjust the Sprint lengths accordingly. Based on the feedback above I have a few key takeaways: 1. Operating in music or with traditional web2 businesses as a DAO can be difficult. It might be worth creating some type of modus operandi for how we want to approach these conversations. Especially as we encourage more community members to take lead on these types of conversations. 2. Scheduling is currently a bottleneck, but it's a solvable problem. By leveraging tools such as zcal, calendly, Chron, etc. hopefully we can have a best practice for WG scheduling by the end of Session 1. In addition - maybe setting up the meeting cadence in the initial WG proposal might make sense. ## Next Steps 1. So far, the team’s focus has been on: * Building the infrastructure for eventual decentralization/DAO implementation * Fleshing out the technical capabilities of the Notables site so holders can take advantage of all of the perks (access to stems, WAV files, etc.) * Promoting the project across the music industry, highlighting the omgkirby community as one of the first decentralized artist projects in the space A highlight of this is Post Mint period was the “Playground” drop - one of the first songs from a decentralized artist to drop on Spotify - built by omgkirby & the community on a Twitch stream. There’s plenty of work left to do before the omgkirbydao is fully decentralized & the community has the information, education & sovereignty to accomplish what they need. But I think the last month has been an awesome feat of what a group of \~2000 people can do in the music industry & web3 space if they’re curious and passionate. ## Proposals Our proposals this far have been focused on getting the project up & running, and making sure our community is involved and their voices are heard. However, to help keep track it would be great if you can title it GENESIS # in your collection or put it in parenthesis after your newly created title. * *Artwork:* Album artwork is up to you! Many users have been using the image from their NFT, others have been using other NFT pictures they own full IP rights to * *Artist:* Please upload as omgkirbyDAO, if you want to upload as another artist please also add omgkirbyDAO as another primary artist. This will help us track all uploads and make it so collectors can listen to each other's tracks on one Spotify or Apple Music page {% hint style="danger" %} DO NOT upload the artist as “omgkirby” this artist page is reserved for official releases and DAO community projects, not genesis uploads. If you do this, your track will be removed from streaming services {% endhint %} * *Songwriter Info:* Most services will allow you to include songwriter & producer metadata. Feel free to include omgkirbyDAO or your own name. Because you own the publishing rights to the song, you are the rightful owner of the songwriting. * *Release Date:* To ensure your track goes live on all streaming services by your desired date, we reccomend setting the release date a**t least one week** from the upload date. Sometimes it can take up to 5 business days for a song to go live. ## **4. Collecting Royalties** * Royalties from these servces will begin to appear in your account **2-3 months after your song's go-live date.** * In order to claim these royalties, you will likely need to complete tax information, so the service can send you a 1099-MISC at the end of the year [if you exceed $10 in royalties](https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-misc). * To understand the reporting, **we recommend downloading and viewing the 'Reporting Period'** reports. This will break down the income you receive, by month. On the other hand - 'Sales Period' reports are more complex. Some DSPs only pay you quarterly, so while the Sales Period information may report higher income - you may have not received this payment yet. ## 5. Tracking Analytics * *Spotify for Artists* * If you submit your music via **Distrokid** or **CDBaby**, you'll get [automatic access](https://artists.spotify.com/en/help/article/getting-access-to-spotify-for-artists) to Spotify for Artists. Check your email or your artist portal after signing up for instructions on how to access your account. * If you submit your music via **Tunecore** or **Level**, you may have to claim your artist profile manually. Upon selling your omgkirbydao Genesis NFT...** * If you sell your NFT and you have the song uploaded to Spotify or Apple. You must remove the song from distribution immediately as it is no longer your IP to exploit.
